PBIS Staff Spotlight...
Each week we will shine the PBIS spotlight on an amazing member of the Markham community. Although we play different roles and serve different functions in our school community, we ALL are responsible for supporting a positive, inclusive school climate! Read on to find out Shannon's take on positive behavior supports and interventions.
SHANNON PIKE, FRONT OFFICE
1. You see a cross-section of students being in the front office! What are some typical behaviors that you see or hear that occur - whether in the front office or school campus?
(ex: refusing to go back to class, leaving without permission, name-calling, avoiding going back to class, etc.)
The students are normally pretty compliant in the office. Even the students that are in trouble are not normally a problem in here. We do hear about some bullying, but it seems to be pretty minor.
2. Think of (but do not name) a teacher or staff who you believe addresses student behavior in a positive way. What is it about him/her that stands out? How do you notice or think that the student responds? Why?
There are two that I can think of. They are both positive with their students all of the time. Their classes are very well behaved, I feel as a result of their positive energy. They are willing to get on their students level to explain and correct in a way that the student leaves feeling understood and appreciated.
3. What are some reasons that you have given students Paws? What specific behavior did you reinforce?
Honesty is the main thing that I have given Paws for. When students turn in money or items of importance. I have also given them to students who I see being a good friend, or helping out when it was not required.
4. PBIS requires that the whole school be active and participate in implementing its components - regardless of job duty. Do you think that this approach will benefit students? If so, why?
Yes. It makes the whole school a team. If the students see everyone participating, they are more likely to be engaged in their learning and positive behavior.
5. How many Paws do estimate you give students per week? Or, how many would you *hope* to give out per week?
I am not sure how many Paws I give out every week. I would like to give out more, but sometimes it just gets crazy in the office.
6. One of the essential elements of PBIS is "catching kids being good". What do you think this means, and why do you think it is important?
Anytime that a student is displaying a positive behavior, we should let them know that we are proud of them. If we show kids that we appreciate good manners, kind words, and helpful hearts/hands they will want to keep showing those behaviors. They love to be appreciated for the good that they do. They are also less likely to seek negative attention, if they are receiving positive attention. They need to have their “tanks” full.
7. Imagine that you are able to recieve Paws as an adult for good behavior. What reward would you choose to spend your Paws on, if the # of Paws did not matter?
(ex: favorite food, a trip to ______, a day in bed, etc.)
I would love to spend my Paws on a lunch/coffee date. It’s nice to get out with other adults when you spend most of your time with littles. ;-)
8. Any other last words or final thoughts you want to share?
Thank you for all that you do. I love that you are spreading positive energy across the campus. We have an amazing staff and a bunch of great kids. I love seeing them rewarded for their good behavior.
Timberwolf thoughts on....BEHAVIOR
Do you ever wonder how to speak to them without escalating their behavior or so they actually "hear you" and they aren't just "listening"? Does the conversation sound like "You’re being a problem. This is why you’re a problem. This is why you need to stop being a problem. This is what you need to do or not do to stop being a problem. [Next conversation] Why are you still being a problem. I need you to stop being a problem. [This may even happen] Here – I’ll even make this deal with you if you stop being a problem so at least the rest of us can have a chance at success." Technology in the classroom...
Tech Tips: Hover Cams
Here are some quick tips on using your hovercam:
- Set the focus to AFL. Is your camera constantly focusing? At the bottom of the computer screen, click on focus and then click AF-L (auto focus lock). This will make the camera focus once and then stop.
- Use the zoom buttons on the base. If the writing is too small for students to see, simply press the magnifying glass with the plus sign at the base of the hover cam to zoom in on the paper you are projecting.
