PBIS Staff Spotlight...

Each week we will shine the PBIS spotlight on an amazing member of the Markham community. Although we play different roles and serve different functions in our school community, we ALL are responsible for supporting a positive, inclusive school climate!  Read on to find out Diana's take on positive behavior supports and interventions.

DIANA LOZA, 1st GRADE

1. Your name popped into the minds of some PBIS team members…you are definitely one of the top 5 most frequent “Paw” distributors!  Each week, it is always so nice to see how frequently you give PAWS for good behavior.  Do you see a difference in the behavior of your class overall?

I do see a difference in my classroom behavior. They get excited when they receive one and show it off with pride.

2. You teach at the elementary level – what is an example of a really challenging student behavior that you have encountered, and what did you do to address it?

One of the many obstacles in first grade is that students are learning how to be focused on a set task for a longer period of time. So, they have to learn to be focused and manage their time wisely. Its with practice and praise that they improve over time.

3. What are some reasons that you have given students Paws?  What specific behaviors did you reinforce?

I normally hand out Paws when the students are are following all three or one of the Markham rules

4. PBIS requires that the whole school be active and participate in implementing its components - regardless of job duty.  Do you think that this approach will benefit students? If so, why?

I think that this approach will benefit all students. When students see that positive behavior is being rewarded in and outside the classroom they will begin to make better choices.

5. We lost count around 100, but how many Paws do estimate you give students per week… and why do you think you use the PAWS to recognize your students at such a high rate??

I really do not keep count of how many paws I hand out. I just know that it promotes positive behavior in my class and motivates them to keep doing their best in class.

6. One of the essential elements of PBIS is "catching kids being good".  What do you think this means, and why do you think it is important?

I think this means that students need to be recognized for the positive choices that they make. Normally negative behavior is what receives attention in schools. However, if you flip  the script and make positive behavior the focus of attention. Then students will want to make better choices in order to receive the recognition.

7.  Imagine that you are able to receive Paws as an adult for good behavior.  What reward would you choose to spend your Paws on, if the # of Paws did not matter?
(ex: favorite food, a trip to ______, a day in bed, etc.)

I think if I were able to receive paws for good behavior. I would spend those paws on having my own parking spot on campus. So, I can actually leave for lunch and not have to worry about not finding a parking spot when I come back.

Timberwolf thoughts on....BEHAVIOR

Public Discipline Systems

We all use some type of praise system in our classroom, usually one that is public and encourages positive peer pressure.  Check out this article that provides a different perspective on public discipline systems and also provides some "right now"  tips.

Meditation = Discipline

This school replaced detention with meditation, sounds crazy but intriguing right?  Check out the results they received from their students by changing the way they addressed perceived negative behavior in this article.

She is going way above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that no children are left behind, giving up her time at lunch and after school, repeating the same thing a million different ways so that they don’t have a choice to do anything but succeed. From her, our sixth graders are learning the real meaning of grit!

PBIS Staff Spotlight...

Each week we will shine the PBIS spotlight on an amazing member of the Markham community. Although we play different roles and serve different functions in our school community, we ALL are responsible for supporting a positive, inclusive school climate!  Read on to find out Shannon's take on positive behavior supports and interventions.

SHANNON PIKE, FRONT OFFICE

1. You see a cross-section of students being in the front office! What are some typical behaviors that you see or hear that occur - whether in the front office or school campus?
(ex: refusing to go back  to class, leaving without permission, name-calling, avoiding going back to class, etc.)

The students are normally pretty compliant in the office.  Even the students that are in trouble are not normally a problem in here.  We do hear about some bullying, but it seems to be pretty minor.

2. Think of (but do not name) a teacher or staff who you believe addresses student behavior in a positive way. What is it about him/her that stands out? How do you notice or think that the student responds?  Why?

There are two that I can think of.  They are both positive with their students all of the time.  Their classes are very well behaved, I feel as a result of their positive energy.  They are willing to get on their students level to explain and correct in a way that the student leaves feeling understood and appreciated.

3. What are some reasons that you have given students Paws?  What specific behavior did you reinforce?

Honesty is the main thing that I have given Paws for.  When students turn in money or items of importance.  I have also given them to students who I see being a good friend, or helping out when it was not required.

4. PBIS requires that the whole school be active and participate in implementing its components - regardless of job duty.  Do you think that this approach will benefit students? If so, why?

Yes.  It makes the whole school a team.  If the students see everyone participating, they are more likely to be engaged in their learning and positive behavior.

5. How many Paws do estimate you give students per week?  Or, how many would you *hope* to give out per week?

I am not sure how many Paws I give out every week.  I would like to give out more, but sometimes it just gets crazy in the office.

6. One of the essential elements of PBIS is "catching kids being good".  What do you think this means, and why do you think it is important?

Anytime that a student is displaying a positive behavior, we should let them know that we are proud of them.  If we show kids that we appreciate good manners, kind words, and helpful hearts/hands they will want to keep showing those behaviors.  They love to be appreciated for the good that they do.  They are also less likely to seek negative attention, if they are receiving positive attention.  They need to have their “tanks” full.

7.  Imagine that you are able to recieve Paws as an adult for good behavior.  What reward would you choose to spend your Paws on, if the # of Paws did not matter?
(ex: favorite food, a trip to ______, a day in bed, etc.)

I would love to spend my Paws on a lunch/coffee date.  It’s nice to get out with other adults when you spend most of your time with littles.  ;-)

8. Any other last words or final thoughts you want to share?

Thank you for all that you do.  I love that you are spreading positive energy across the campus.  We have an amazing staff and a bunch of great kids.  I love seeing them rewarded for their good behavior.

Timberwolf thoughts on....BEHAVIOR

We all have that one student that is more difficult than others.

Do you ever wonder how to speak to them without escalating their behavior or so they actually "hear you" and they aren't just "listening"?  Does the conversation sound like "You’re being a problem. This is why you’re a problem. This is why you need to stop being a problem. This is what you need to do or not do to stop being a problem. [Next conversation] Why are you still being a problem. I need you to stop being a problem. [This may even happen] Here – I’ll even make this deal with you if you stop being a problem so at least the rest of us can have a chance at success."    Check out this article to find a few helpful Tips for talking to that student that you're really trying to get through to.

Technology in the classroom...

Tech Tips: Hover Cams

Here are some quick tips on using your hovercam:
-          Set the focus to AFL. Is your camera constantly focusing? At the bottom of the computer screen, click on focus and then click AF-L (auto focus lock). This will make the camera focus once and then stop.
-          Use the zoom buttons on the base.  If the writing is too small for students to see, simply press the magnifying glass with the plus sign at the base of the hover cam to zoom in on the paper you are projecting.
-          Need more help? Ask Stephanie Sanders

Snap Shot Update...

Thank you to all of you that participated in the Snap Shot process.  SST meetings are scheduled for Friday and any overflows will be scheduled throughout the week as available.  Please come to SST meetings prepared with data and documentation of academics, behavior, and interventions currently in place.  If you need assistance, please see Alicia, Karen, or Stephanie.

"I am responsible for doing the work I need to do today even though it may be hard"- Helen Keller

An option for teaching responsibility to is discuss a book that teachers a lesson about responsibility.  Here are some cool books to choose from:

Recap of Last Week...

Last week was full of excitement... Clowns, Walk to School Day, and more.  We gave out more than 100 water bottles to students that walked or rode to school safely.  If any students did not get their water bottle, please let us know.

We had a huge delivery of donations for the Paw Shop from Brown Trout.  Let's make sure we are giving out those Paws of Pride so that students can buy as much as they'd like!
